I wonder when Melanie’s going to update this with all of her recent adventures?
Wondering

Posted in Canada, United States on 05/06/2010 07:58 pm by MichaelIt’s nice to see Melanie posting again! We’ve been pretty bad at keeping everyone up to date with what’s happening, huh? Well, where I last left off, Melanie was on her way back to Canada and I was back at my parents’ place in Wisconsin. Initially we had planned on her coming back in 2-3 weeks (so, now), but it seems like the better option was for her to wait and come back toward the end of the month. It sucks now, but it means the next time she goes back she won’t have to stay in Canada for nearly as long. It also has the added benefit of her being back home for her mom’s birthday, something she hasn’t been able to do for the last couple of years now. All in all, it’s sad we have to be apart for 5 weeks, but it’ll work out in the end.
Things have been incredibly busy State-side lately. I recently accepted a contract-to-hire position doing web development at EPIC Creative. I shadowed a developer last week Friday and officially begin working this coming Monday. Not sure how Reba’s going to be left by herself while my mom is at work. Here’s to hoping she doesn’t destroy anything! On top of that, I’m still going full steam ahead on StageBloc. It’s not ideal that I pick up a full-time job on top of it, but until we’re bringing in steady income from it, I need to in order to pay my way. Throw into the mix half a dozen freelance/side projects and I’m quite busy! This would all be a lot more easily managed if I was better organized.
For years I’ve tried to get myself on a good system, or in an efficient groove that would allow me to focus on what needs to get done and stay sane under higher work loads with minimal stress, all while still having time for myself. The problem is, I get distracted. I don’t sit down and focus on what I need to be doing at the time, and so things don’t get done – or they get half finished – and I’m left with a bunch of loose ends that become more and more frayed the longer it takes me to complete them.
The biggest helper in this area so far has been Melanie. I’m definitely getting better, and in no short order thanks to her pushing me to do so. I know I get frustrated sometimes when she pushes me, even though it’s exactly what I need! So I really appreciate her sticking through it and pushing ahead to help get me to where I want to be – and really need to be if I want to have a comfortable, healthy, happy lifestyle.
In addition to her nudging me in the right direction, I started looking at a tool called Remember The Milk. This is something I’ve heard about for years, but never really looked into. It’s not perfect, and I’m still getting used to it, but it might be something that will help me stay focused at times and assist in prioritizing what needs to be done and when. There’s are browser extensions for it that integrate it with Gmail, but they’ve been having some compatibility issues with it this week, so it’s something I’ll check out in the coming days/weeks.
With the right mindset, good tools at your disposal, and a helping dose of encouragement from those around you, getting focused and organized is definitely an attainable goal. Sometimes the hardest part is realizing you need to make a change, but once you take that first step, if you keep moving your feet, eventually you’ll reach your destination – you just have to pace yourself and go at a speed you’re comfortable with.
What am I getting into?
Posted in Canada on 04/28/2010 10:39 am by MélanieI have been sitting here for over half hour and wondering what I could write that would be interesting. A little over a week ago I was sitting on a bus to come back to Canada. In a month, I will be back on that bus to ride it all the way to Milwaukee. You are probably wondering: ” What are you going to do for 5 weeks?” Simple: Anything I can do with the ressources I have.
Here’s a few things:
- Go Camping
- Learn Spanish
- Bake delicious and not so delicious things
- Take photographs
- Keep up with this blog
- Much more…
You think you have an Idea for me? Go ahead and send it to me. Its free? Then I will do it!
Please Note: I cannot defy Gravity. It`s against the law.
That’s it for today. Stay tuned to see what I am getting into.

Posted in Canada, United States on 04/19/2010 11:01 pm by MichaelSaturday I dropped Melanie off at the Greyhound station in downtown Milwaukee. For those who don’t know yet, USCIS only let her stay for one month this trip, instead of the planned three. Initially they wanted to deny her altogether, then made us fight to get the one month issuance. For whatever reason they seem to thrive on making people suffer and plead for some reasoning before they give you a sliver of what you want.
At any rate, it’s always sad having to say goodbye see you later to someone you love, but this trip was especially difficult. You’d think that after doing it so many times, you’d almost get used to it in a sense. The key difference this time is that we’ve spent literally every day of the past year together, whereas before we’d see each other for one week, maybe two if we were really lucky, before having to be separated again. We’re not giving up, though. Far from it…
We’ve been coming up with things for each other to do, ways to keep ourselves busy so that the three weeks we’re apart will hopefully fly by. After all, it’s hard to believe that we were back in the States for four weeks already! Time just flew by, largely due to how busy we were – which is both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. It’s nice keeping busy, seeing people, and otherwise just being active and productive. However, it is nice sometimes to just sit around with nothing in particular going on.
So, over the next few weeks expect more updates as we keep ourselves busy and occupied while we await the time when we’ll be back together again. Hopefully the updates won’t stop there.
Dusting off the Classics
Posted in General on 03/30/2010 11:05 pm by MichaelAs my dad was cleaning out part of the basement, he found a couple of old boxes. Contained within these boxes were the following items: a Sega Genesis, a Super Nintendo, and yes, a regular, old school NES, along with all of my games for each. These boxes contained my childhood.
This photo I found on Flickr shows just a fraction of what was actually in the boxes.
After going sorting through what worked and what didn’t, I have to say this: thanks goodness for RCA cables and game discs. It took me forever to get that coaxial cable lined up just right so it stayed plugged in. Remembering how much of a pain it used to be (and still is!) to get some of these games to play, Melanie finally got to settle down and enjoy some original Mario Bros.
Well, kind of. The game was doing that I’m-kind-of-working-but-not-entirely thing, but she wasn’t going to be deterred. We even battled through the NES giving us an all-gray screen and cycling on and off, something Mel doesn’t remember from the good ol’ days, but it certainly brought back memories for me.
Finally giving up on Mario after trying three different game cartridges, we moved on to the Super Nintendo and Melanie finally got to experience Super Mario World. She claims to not remember that one, and I can see why: although it’s fun in it’s own right, it simply cannot compete with the originals, forever living in their shadows. Super Mario 64, however, is a completely different story…
A little bit later I found out that my parents actually had one of the “newer” systems that aren’t made by Nintendo but can play the original NES cartridges. I brought it downstairs and hooked it up (via RCA!) and popped in Super Mario Bros 3 again – it worked like a treat! For the past 20 minutes now Melanie’s been talking to herself as she plays through the game and relives old, 8-bit childhood memories.
March Update
Posted in General, United States on 03/23/2010 10:40 pm by MichaelYikes! Talk about being silent on the home front! Big things have happened recently. To start with, Melanie and I are back in Wisconsin! I’m here “for good,” but Melanie has to go back next month thanks to issues with US Customs and Immigration (again) ((surprise surprise)). We follow all the steps we’re told to, then we get told what we did was wrong. It’d be great if they showed a little consistency and followed their own instructions.
Anyway, the important thing is we’re here again. At the very latest, Melanie should be able to get her student visa and come to school end of July. Three months of her not being here would really stink, but I could visit her, and she could come here for 1-2 weeks at a time, so… it’s definitely doable. We’ll figure something out; we always do. We’re in the home stretch now!
So sue me (in Canadian dollars) – Part 2
Posted in Canada on 09/24/2009 08:36 pm by MichaelPicking up where I left off a really long time ago, let me finish telling you about my first trip to Canada. After my night in Detroit, my flight left the next morning and took me to Montreal. I was greeted by Mel and got to meet the first of her family: her brother Dany. Not being particularly fluent in French (think: yes, no, toaster, minus the toaster), I did my best to have a conversation with him during the car ride home; the situation wasn’t made any easier by Mel insisting I sit in the front with him. The ride went well, and we understood each other for the most part, with Mel translating when necessary. Actually, the only thing he didn’t understand was me asking him how much of what I was saying he understood.
As the drive progressed, I knew we were getting close to our destination when we passed the only street light in the entire town – one they got just a few years previous. Driving through a cozy little neighborhood that feels infinitely safer than any town I’ve ever been in back home, I start to get nervous. It’s time to meet the parents.
As we get my bags and head inside, I’m greeted by her parents in a house that’s just as cozy as the neighborhood – a welcome reprieve from the biting cold outside. After some somewhat clumsy introductions that left each of us giggling, I started to settle into the French life that I’d be living for the next week or so. Time to learn French.
Thinking of ordering eggs in America?Forget it…

Its about time that I write something about my last visit to America right? Where to start? The fun part? The long and boring part? Let`s tackle the long and boring part for now; Once again, I took the bus for 25-30 hours long. This time I didnt almost made it through customs. The officer put me aside for a good 10 minutes for no reason. That was nerves wrecking, . Was I going to go back to Canada or was I going to pull off a Mexican of myself and enter America anyway? tehehe. We all know what happened!
Once in Milwaukee, I was super duper excited to see Michael once again, Heart was racing, Thoughts of us running through my head, and guess who wasnt at the bus station when I arrived? tehehe.Lets not blame him for my bus arriving half an hour earlier. He got me a hot chocolate and a muffin. : )
I had a pretty good time… I mean I damn good time on my second stay with Mike, Even went to the hairdresser with Kristina to fix my hair ( thanks to a stupid Canadian hairdresser) I now have bangs for the first time. Why isnt there any snow in America? Seriously Milwaukee isnt THAT far away from Canada! I wanted to go sledding but I guess notm Got a mexican night instead =) La la la! Fiesta!!! The root beer was pooring and the nachos were good, Thanks to Brian , who was the only one to bring something mexican! Viva el sumbrero! I would had brought one too if I didnt have to go through customs and a long bus ride =P I already get weird look for the accent imagine top it with a sumbrero! Thats asking for trouble…
How would you react if your amazing boyfriend had brought you to the very same place that you had the best memories with? asdfjkhkfgh! I KNOW! Yes , yes Mike did brought me back to the B&B ! and even took the day off! Crazy! It was wicked! Best surprise ever, You would expect that huh? It was a really sweet thing to do. I had the chance as well to go for breakfast with Dawn and her sisters and her mother. Everything was great but why do Americans needs to supersize EVERYTHING? Seriously, I was asking for 2 eggs they wanted to give me 3. If you ask for 3 you get 4! WHat the?!! Oh the funny part is, You ask 1 egg . and and and? well SURPRISE !! they wont give you 2! RAWR! Ouff. It felt good to vent off a bit hahah.
I was almost going to forget about going to Madison! Woooah! Saw the “liberty statue“ on the lake, Went to Noodles! saw Paul blart and ate CHOCOLATE! That was a pretty good day AS WELL!!!
Well, not to get too boring, I will Maybe continue this breakfast story later. Who knows. Maybe they`ll get my hashbrowns right ; ) It was really nice to see everyone and seeing new faces as well =) Well kids, Have yourselves a wicked time and remember that I`ll be back , MOUAHAHA!
Oh Americans and their thinking… =P
So sue me (in Canadian dollars) – Part 1
Posted in Canada on 02/06/2009 10:46 pm by MichaelFinally sitting down and putting into words my experience of visiting Canada for the first time. Well, what can I say? I mean, I got stranded in Detroit on my way there, Cincinnati on the way back, it was effing cold, and everyone spoke French. Alright alright, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds. Here’s a proper run-down of my trip:
December 30, I fly out of Milwaukee to Detroit; considering my plane didn’t arrive until after I should have been boarded, things started out shaky. Possibly more irksome, however, was the fire alarm that went off for 10 minutes at my gate, followed by an announcement over the PA system by an airport employee that got cut short with no follow up. Okay, so we finally board, they blame it on weather, yada yada. Typical airline banter, right?
Next on the list of things gone awry was the fact that the pilot claimed the flight to Detroit was going to take substantially less time (I’m talking almost half) than what my ticket said. Confirming the discrepancy with the girl sitting next to me, my confusion mounted. Having a very short (less than 60 minutes) connecting flight, I welcomed a shorter flight time, provided we weren’t pushing the engines too hard and burning through fuel we didn’t have to spare.
Upon landing, I find out that of course my connecting flight is literally at the extreme-most opposite end of the Detroit airport- which is quite large, by the way. With legs that were incredibly sore from paintballing, I took off at a respectable pace while wincing through the pain coursing through my body. Arriving at my gate, I find that my plane has not left yet! But, ho! they will not let me on. Why? Because they had already closed the door. With no other connecting flight available, I found myself stranded in Detroit without so much as a meal voucher from the airline.
